At Home in the World: A Memoir by Joyce MaynardMy review
rating: 3 of 5 stars
In general, I don't read a lot of memoirs because I tend to find the author's voice self centered. That being said, this is the second memoir I've read recently (the first being Claire Bloom's memoir about her life and her marriage to Philip Roth). Both Maynard and Bloom have similar stories to tell. Children, relationships with well known novelists, growth, change, etc. The major difference between these two books are that 1) Claire Bloom is an actor and *not* a writer (namely, hers was a more interesting story to tell, packed with dirt about several legendary stage and screen actors, 2) Maynard is a writer and not an actor, hence making her memoir well written and thoughtful.
Nothing struck me as surprising about Maynard's story. And she never looks back in regret.

Oh wow, I have to read Claire Bloom's.
What struck me about Maynard's memoir is how she put us right back in the head of her at 19, precocious, having trouble fitting in, wanting to be loved, thinking she'd finally found the one man who could make her happy, and then being kicked out.
